Treatment of a simple wound
– A sim p le wo und is a break in the co ntinuity o f the sk in lim ited in d ep th at the sub-
cutaneo us fatty tissue, that d o es no t affect the und erly ing structures (m uscle, bo ne,
jo ints, m ajo r arteries, nerves, tend o ns) and witho ut significant lo ss o f tissue.
– T he go al o f treatm ent is to assure rap id healing o f the wo und witho ut co m p licatio ns
o r sequelae. S everal basic rules ap p ly :
• rap id ly treat wo und s, while m aintaining the rules o f asep sis and the o rd er o f the
initial p ro ced ures: cleaning-exp lo ratio n-excisio n;
• id entify wo und s that need to be sutured and tho se fo r which suturing wo uld be
harm ful o r d angero us;
• im m ed iately suture recent, clean, sim p le wo und s (less than 6 ho urs o ld ) and d elay
suturing co ntam inated wo und s and / o r tho se m o re than 6 ho urs o ld ;
• p revent lo cal (abscess) o r general (gas gangrene; tetanus) infectio ns.

– O ne d issecting fo rcep s, o ne need le-h o ld er, o ne p air o f surgical scisso rs and o ne P ean
o r Ko cher fo rcep s are usually eno ugh.
– O ne o r two o ther artery fo rcep s, a p air o f F arabeuf retracto rs and a scalp el m ay be
useful fo r a co ntused o r d eep wo und .
I nstrum ents to suture o ne wo und fo r o ne p atient m ust be p ack aged and sterilised
to gether (suture bo x o r set) to lim it hand ling and break s in asep sis.
Renewable supplies
– F o r lo cal anaesthesia: sterile sy ringe and need le; 1% lidocaine (witho ut ep inep hrine)
– S terile glo ves, fenestrated sterile to wel
– S terile abso rbable and no n-abso rbable sutures
– A ntisep tic and sup p lies fo r d ressings
– F o r d rainage: co rrugated rubber d rain o r equivalent, ny lo n suture
