10. Medical and minor surgical procedures
Dressings
– T h e o bjective o f d ressing wo und s is to p ro m o te h ealing. T h e p ro ced ure includ es
cleaning, d isinfectio n and p ro tectio n o f th e w o und wh ile resp ecting th e rules o f
hy giene.
– N o t all wo und s need to be co vered by a d ressing (e.g. a clean wo und that has been
sutured fo r several d ay s; a sm all d ry wo und no t requiring sutures).
Material
– Sterile instruments

• o ne d issecting fo rcep s
• o ne p air o f surgical scisso rs o r o ne scalp el to excise necro tic tissue and to cut gauz e
o r sutures
Instrum ents fo r one d ressing fo r one p atient m ust be wrap p ed to gether in p ap er o r
fabric (o r can be p laced in a m etallic bo x) and sterilised to gether to lim it hand ling
and break s in asep sis. 5 to 1 0 co m p resses m ay be includ ed in this set.
If there are no sterile instrum ents, a d ressing can be d o ne using sterile glo ves.
– Renewable supplies
• sterile co m p resses
• no n-sterile d isp o sable glo ves
• ad hesive tap e and / o r crep e o r gauz e band age
• sterile 0 .9 % so d ium chlo rid e o r sterile water
• d ep end ing o n the wo und : antisep tic (p o ly vid o ne io d ine scrub so lutio n, p o ly vid o ne
io d ine d erm al so lutio n), p araffin co m p resses, analgesics
Organisation of care
P ro p er o rganiz atio n o f care help s m aintain the rules o f asep sis and d ecreases the risk o f
co ntam inatio n o f the wo und o r transm issio n o f o rganism s fro m o ne p atient to ano ther:
– A ssign o ne ro o m fo r d ressings. It m ust be cleaned and the waste rem o ved every d a1y0.
T he d ressing table m ust be d isinfected after each p atient.
– D ressings m ay be ap p lied at the bed sid e if the p atient‟s co nd itio n requires. U se a
clean, d isinfected d ressing tro lley w ith : o n th e up p er tray , sterile and / o r clean
m aterial (d ressing set, extra co m p resses, etc.) and o n the lo wer tray , sep tic m aterial
(co ntainer fo r co ntam inated instrum ents, sharp s d isp o sal co ntainer and a co ntainer
o r garbage bag fo r waste).
– P rep are all th e necessary m aterial in a w ell lit area. I f necessary , arrange fo r an
assistant to be p resent.
– W ear p ro tective glasses if there is a risk o f p ro jectio n fro m an o o z ing wo und .
