Acute prostatitis
Acute infection of th e prostate, m ost com m only d ue to Gram neg ativ e bacteria.
Clinical features
– S ig ns of cystitis (burning on urination and urinary frequency) with fev er in m en,
perineal pain is com m on.
– Very painful rectal exam ination.
– U rinalysis: leucocyturia and pyuria; h aem aturia m ay be present.
Treatment
Difficult, th e infection m ay becom e ch ronic.
– Increase fluid intake: 3 to 4 litres/d ay
– Fev er (see pag e 26) and pain (see pag e 29)
– P rolong ed antibiotic treatm ent:
ciprofloxacin P O : 1 g /d ay in 2 d iv id ed d oses for 28 d ays
